چکیده
Title of Document: SURFACE CHARACTERIZATION OF VISCOELASTIC MATERIALS THROUGH SPECTRAL INTERMITTENT CONTACT ATOMIC FORCE MICROSCOPY Jeffrey Charles Williams, Master of Science, 2012 Directed By: Assistant Professor Santiago Solares Department of Mechanical Engineering The ability to recover material properties at the atomic scale has been the ongoing objective of the Atomic Force Microscope (AFM). More specifically, the most popular operation of the probe with this microscope (Intermittent Contact AFM) has not yet been able to resolve material properties of viscoelastic samples. By using the force and position time signals of the AFM and the constitutive equations for linear viscoelasticity, a method is developed by which such material properties are extracted in real-time scanning. A parametric study is then performed by simulating surface and AFM system conditions to understand the limits under which the method can accurately be performed in experiment. Suggestions are made to help experimentalists optimize the method to cater to the range of viscoelastic materials being measured and the results are related to measured material properties in literature. The method is found to be accurate for a wide range of viscoelastic materials. SURFACE CHARACTERIZATION OF VISCOELASTIC MATERIALS THROUGH SPECTRAL INTERMITTENT CONTACT ATOMIC FORCE MICROSCOPY

Nanoscale effects in the characterization of viscoelastic materials with atomic force microscopy: coupling of a quasi-three-dimensional standard linear solid model with in-plane surface interactions
Significant progress has been accomplished in the development of experimental contact-mode and dynamic-mode atomic force microscopy (AFM) methods designed to measure surface material properties. However, current methods are based on one-dimensional (1D) descriptions of the tip-sample interaction forces, thus neglecting the intricacies involved in the material behavior of complex samples (such a...

The temperature-dependent indent recovery of polymer materials was measured by atomic force microscopy (AFM). A numerical model based on the Boussinesq equations was developed to simulate the viscoelastic indent recovery. Viscoelastic solution of stress and displacement is obtained by using the corresponding principle between elasticity and viscoelasticity. The numerical solution provides resul...

We present a quantitative method for determining the viscoelastic properties of materials with nanometer spatial resolution. The approach is based on the atomic force acoustic microscopy technique that involves the resonant frequencies of the atomic force microscopy cantilever when its tip is in contact with a sample surface. We derive expressions for the viscoelastic properties of the sample i...

We present a method to improve accuracy in measurements of nanoscale viscoelastic material properties with contact resonance atomic force microscope methods. Through the use of the two-dimensional hydrodynamic function, we obtain a more precise estimate of the fluid damping experienced by the cantilever-sample system in contact resonance experiments, leading to more accurate values for the tip-...
متن کاملExploring mechanism of xanthate adsorption on chalcopyrite surface: An atomic force microscopy study
In this work, adsorption of the potassium amyl xanthate collector on the pure chalcopyrite surface was studied by applying atomic force microscopy (AFM). The adsorption experiments were carried out at different concentrations of the collector and at diverse pH values in the presence or absence of exterior ions. The changes occurring in the surface morphology of chalcopyrite due to the collector...
